Ozone has three atoms of oxygen, instead of the two atoms found in the air we breath. The extra atom of oxygen oxidizes microbes such as bacteria, viruses, mold and other fungi, killing them. It is one of the most powerful sterilants in the world. It is capable of killing bacteria, viruses, mold and other fungi. It naturally occurs in nature and in the human body, to help kill off unwanted microbes. Ozone generating machines are a very helpful tool in mold remediation. It can be used to kill off the mold in all areas it is able to get to. The only question I have is how deep into building materials it can penetrate. Many remodelers use ozone generators as the last step in the remodeling process, to make sure the building is healthy. Motels use them to kill the smell of tobacco smoke.

Ozone generators can be set onto their high setting for 24-72 hours, to kill the mold spores in a home, workplace or school. The building needs to be sealed off to prevent people and pets from being inside during this microbe killing process. When ozone is generated at high levels it is not safe for people to be present. Before re-entering the building the ozone needs to be turned off, and the building aired out. Ozone respirator masks can be used to safely enter the ozone filled building. There is debate as to whether continual ozone generation, at very low levels, is safe for people.

The most knowledgeable people I know on the use of ozone equipment are the owners of Crystal Air, Dave and Daryl Loewen. They share my passion for helping people who have mold problems in their breathing environment. They have a lot of good information to help one understand ozone in their question and answer section.
